A Call to Perform, Exhibit, and Engage

Who We Are

Inquilinos Boricuas en Acción (IBA) empowers individuals and families to improve their lives and achieve socio-economic mobility through high-quality affordable housing, education, financial and resident empowerment and arts programs.

In 1968, the Puerto Rican community of the Parcel 19 in the South End organized, and with the support of hundreds of protesters, they fought to stop the displacement they were facing. They finally won this battle and created IBA, which not only allowed them to stay in the neighborhood but also gave them the right to revitalize the neighborhood, and control and develop their community.

We are a nationally recognized Community Development Corporation and non-profit organization with five programs including Early Education, Youth Development, Financial Empowerment, Resident Services, and the Arts. We started in the South End neighborhood of Boston, to address displacement of low-income families due to urban development. IBA offers affordable housing and supportive programming to increase social and economic mobility for the families we serve.

Today, IBA has expanded its affordable housing portfolio to include 667 units that are strengthened by comprehensive programming. IBA’s work is a daily reminder of what can be achieved with effort, determination and community organizing; the legacy of those brave Puerto Rican activists has been recognized for over five decades and continues to be studied by academics and other national and international communities.


Call for Artists

IBA is seeking proposals from experienced visual and performing artists particularly those with experience working in community-based or culturally significant spaces; to collaborate with us in presenting vibrant high-quality performances, exhibitions, workshops, and placemaking activities that engage our residents and broader community. This initiative celebrates the richness of Puerto Rican heritage and reflects on IBA’s cultural and historical journey all in our new La CASA – The Center for Arts, Self-determination and Activism building. 

The selected artist(s) will collaborate with IBA staff and community members to ensure the performance, exhibit and engagement reflect shared values and lived experiences.

We invite proposals that:

  • Educate and engage participants around Latinx culture and/or the history of IBA

  • Incorporate personal artistic practice and storytelling

  • Include an artistic skill, concept, or experience to be shared with attendees

  • Offer interactive or participatory elements 

 Workshops may span 1 to 3 days, and proposals can include:

  • Visual Arts: hands-on workshops, collaborative art-making, installations

  • Performance Arts: music, dance, spoken word, theater, or other live performances
